Materials Cloud

Operator: Materials Cloud is operated by the Materials Cloud team (opens in new tab).
Host: Materials Cloud is hosted at the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre (opens in new tab) (CSCS) in Lugano. CSCS is an autonomous unit of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (opens in new tab) in Zurich (ETH Zurich) and closely collaborates with the local University of Lugano (opens in new tab) (USI).
Funding: Materials Cloud started thanks to funding from the Swiss National Science Foundation (opens in new tab) (SNF) and EPFL (opens in new tab) through the MARVEL National Centre of Competence in Research (opens in new tab) (MARVEL NCCR). Today, it has become a partnership between many consortia (opens in new tab).

Virtual Hardware: Materials Cloud runs on the Kubernetes cluster at CSCS (opens in new tab), which provides a framework for deploying containerized applications. The entire technical infrastructure of Materials Cloud is physically located on CSCS premises, with the exception of the Archive, which runs on a VM hosted on Microsoft Azure, see here (opens in new tab) for more information.
Data storage: Data uploaded to or generated in Materials Cloud is stored at CSCS in an S3-compatible object storage based on the Ceph Object Gateway.
DOIs: Materials Cloud partners with the ETH library (opens in new tab), a founding DataCite (opens in new tab) member, to provide DOIs for Materials Cloud Archive records.
